Andy Black bags Party Poker title

19th February, 2008

Andy Black can finally put his name to a major poker title after coming up trumps in the Party Poker Premier League Grand Final.

The Irishman has been on the professional circuit for two decades but during that time had earned himself a reputation for piling up huge amounts of poker chips before crashing out in spectacular style.

Black was famously knocked out of the 1997 World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event by its eventual winner, the late Stu Ungar. In 2005, he was dominating the final table of the WSOP main event before a dramatic reversal of fortunes which saw him bust out in fifth place.

Speculation had abounded that another colossal meltdown was on the cards in the Party Poker Premier League after the Belfast-native amassed a hefty stack worth some $330,000 (£170,000), but this time Black held fast and finally put paid to his demons.

The Premier League has a substantial buy-in of $60,000, which makes it one of the most expensive tournaments to join on the professional circuit.
