Canadian bags EPT Grand Final
21st April, 2008
A 22-year-old Canadian business student has won the most lucrative poker tournament of the year so far by bagging top spot at the European Poker Tour Grand Final.
Glen Chorny saw off second-place Denes Kalo of Hungary in a comically-swift two-hand heads-up in Monte Carlo which ended almost as soon as it had begun with a dubious A-5, K-Q all-in.
Kalo was left praying for a miracle after the flop paired up Chorny's Ace - and with the turn and river cards yielding no relief the 31-year-old stockbroker ultimately had to accept a conciliatory prize of 179,000 (£143,000).
For the victor, however, there was a colossal first-place bounty of two million euros, just a fraction of a 8.4 million euro total prize pool that this year's PokerStars-sponsored event amassed.
Third place went to Max Villemure, 19, from Montreal, while Isaac 'westmenloAA' Baron came in fourth. In total 842 players entered the Texas Hold'Em event, each fronting up a 10,000 euro buy-in.
Chorny notched up another big success three months ago when he won $80,000 (£40,000) at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.
