Delayed date set for WSOP final

The final table of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) looks set to be held in November, USA Today has reported.

With the tournament kicking of in earnest on May 30th and finishing by mid-July, finalists will have to wait some four months before they take their seats for the end-of-series showdown.

That will allow the top-performing poker player profiles the chance to secure big-money sponsorship contracts ahead of the final, but according to some analysts it could compromise the series.

Canadian pro Daniel Negreanu noted that US network ESPN will begin airing taped broadcasts of various events from July 22nd onwards - something that finalists could seek to exploit.

"They're going to watch the ESPN broadcasts and go, 'Oh, did you notice that? When he does this, he's bluffing'," Mr Negreanu told USA Today.

That view was echoed by WSOP 2004 Main Event champion Greg Raymer, who added: "This long gap allows the players to become completely different people between the time they make the final table and when they play it."
