First big poker tournament of 2008 kicks off

3rd January, 2008

poker players have flocked from miles around to take part in the first major European tournament of 2008 which is today kicking off in Galway, Ireland.

The Irish Poker Championship is taking place at the plush Radisson Hotel & Spa and will last for three days.

Around 400 poker players are expected to head to the inaugural event from the UK, Ireland, Europe and even the US.

On all of the days there will be a Main Event tournament with a buy-in of $2,000 (1,000) as well as smaller events taking place throughout the event.

Bookies said they received early bets on Joe Beevers and Julian Gardner while others expected to perform well include Bruno Fitoussi, Roy Brindley and Marcel Luske.

"Those with names and reputations in the poker world are bound to attract interest but we are certainly looking out for movers in the market from the big pool of local players and top online qualifiers," a spokesman for online sports betting site Party Bets told Poker News.
