Ron Schut has beaten off competition from 50,000 other players to become the winner of the annual 2008 Great Poker League (GPL).
The amateur player not only earned the number one spot but is also more than £1,500 better off after having secured numerous top-three spots in the GPL's monthly leagues of 2007.
All of the top 100 players in the annual league won a cash prize in recognition of their online poker achievements throughout the year, which saw in excess of 1,000 games played each month.
Suzie Hawker, managing director of thegreatpokerleague.com, applauded Ron for his success and revealed that the community-based website would undergo numerous changes throughout 2008, including the improvement of player stats and the addition of three new poker rooms.
"I am absolutely delighted for Ron - he is an exceptional player and also a fantastic person," commented Ms Hawker. "[thegreatpokerleague.com is] also a very social website with a great community and I was lucky enough to meet Ron as well as many of our other players earlier this year."
The GPL is a free online poker website that bases its league on the results of numerous multi-table tournaments held daily.
