Harman hosts online poker fundraiser

25th March, 2008

Poker player Jennifer Harman has become the latest professional to host a fundraising game in support of charitable causes.

The two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner was the driving force behind the Jennifer Harman Animal Lovers Poker Tournament, which saw thousands of online poker fans competing in support of animal rights.

Organisers had expected around 1,000 entrants to join the event and were astounded when the overall player count more than trebled that estimate - with half the $10 (£5) buy-in automatically going to charity.

The Texas Hold'Em tournament was also sponsored by online operator Full Tilt, which brought with it some big names on the professional circuit including Andy Bloch, Clonie Gowen and Erik Seidel.

In the end, online player "Jzeeee" took home the top spot and a first-place cash prize of $2,235 - but it was the homeless pets at the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals which were the ultimate winners, benefiting from a sizable $30,000 donation.

Half of that figure was gleaned from buy-in for the tournament while Full Tilt put forward the other half to show its support for the cause.
