Hungarian tops European Challenge II
21st March, 2008
A Hungarian national has emerged as the victor of the Party Poker European Challenge II, held in the Austrian capital Vienna this week.
Peter Gelencser also made it to the final table last year with a strong chip-lead, but he ended up coming third behind trainee lawyer Branimir Brunovic and a Croation online poker qualifier.
That disappointment was followed by a prolonged dry spot for the 20-year-old journalism student, with the last 12 months affording him just one moderate 500 euro (£390) victory.
According to Party Poker, however, there was never any doubt that Gelencser would be returning as a strong contender in this year's poker event.
"Peter looked like the obvious winner in 2007, so we are happy he finally converted a dominant stack into a title in 2008," a spokesman said. "There's little doubt that he is one to watch and we expect him to be even more successful in years to come."
Gelencser said his reversal of fortunes felt "fantastic" and he claimed that while poker has yet to become a mainstream sport in Hungary, the country is fostering a number of worthy players.
