John Phan wins WPT Legends of Poker
2nd September, 2008
Doing it in style again, John Phan wins yet another big tournament, and this time it was the World Poker Tour’s Legends of Poker event, which was held at the Bicycle Casino this year.
Nicknamed ‘The Razor’, Phan made headlines again after outlasting a sizable field to capture the large first place prize of more than $1 million.
“I’m so happy,” Phan said. “This is a dream come true for me. I’m so excited. I don’t know what to say. I told myself that I had to play well, focus, and never give up, which I didn’t. I was short-stacked, played really well, and picked my spots.”
When the action got down to heads up, the tournament was still anyone’s to win. It was a hard-fought battle to the end, but ultimately it was Phan who was drinking the champaign. The tournament was a $10,000 buy in main event that began on the 23rd of August, beginning with 373 players – many of which were big name professional poker players, including Daniel Negreanu and Phil Ivey.
“We embrace all of our legends, but it’s all the sweeter when one of our home players takes home the prize,” said Kelley O’Hara, marketing director.
The prize pool was more than $3.5 million, which is probably why it was such a fight to the end because nobody is willing to give up that kind of money.
“This was a hard-won victory and viewers will be on the edge of their seats with this episode,” said Zaven Esmaili, casino manager.
