Kostritsyn bags 2008 Aussie Millions title

21st January, 2008

Alexander Kostritsyn has confounded the pundits' expectations to walk away with the 2008 Aussie Millions Main Poker Event title.

The Russian underdog beat off stiff competition from seasoned players such as Michael Chrisanthopoulos, who had started the day with nearly four times as many poker chips as the others final six.

Aussie Chrisanthopoulos soon saw his chip lead dwindle as Kostritsyn stormed ahead, however, blasting Peter Mobbs off the table before sending local favorite Antonio Casale packing with a pair of pocket aces.

The Russian continued his dominance by ejecting Nino Marotta and then sat back as Chrisanthopoulos disposed of Peter Ling, only to fall to a desperate all-in that seemed doomed from the start - banking on suited A6 to see off Kostritsyn's pocket tens with 5,5,3,3,10 falling on the poker table.

Erik Seidel was the last to feel Kostritsyn's wrath, leaving the jubilant victor - who has only been playing for three year - some AUD$1,650,000 (736,000) better off.

"Actually I felt quite comfortable," the Russian casually told pokerlistings.com in a post-game interview. "I was very sure I was one of the best players left in the field."
