25th February, 2008

655 participants all gathered for the commencement of the LA Poker Classic tournament on Saturday at the Commerce Casino. There were in fact so many players that they had to use some tables elsewhere until enough players in the ballroom had been eliminated.

The prize pool created by this mass of players was 6.384million dollars, which will, in the final be shared between only 63 of the 655. First place will receive $1,596,100. Second place will receive just under the million mark, third, still over 600,000, all the way down to 22,020 for players placed 55th to 63rd.

As well as the winnings, the first placed player’s payout will include a $25,500 seat in the World Poker Tour Championship.

The end of the first day saw 440 players still in the tournament, only 215 have been eliminated thus far. Heading into the second day David Singer has the chip lead with 137,400 chips, closely followed by the "magician", Antonio Esfandiari with 119,475.
