Latin American poker tour launched

12th March, 2008

Latin America will be playing host to its first major poker tour, after PokerStars announced plans to visit a number of South American countries.

Commencing May 3rd, 2008, the Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) will start its run in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with players up for a $600,000 prize over the three days of the tournament.

The tour will then move on to San Jose in Costa Rica between May 22nd and 24th, before visiting Uruguay between August 7th and 9th.

Glenn Cademartori, LAPT president, commented that poker is becoming increasingly popular in Latin American countries.

"It's one of the fastest-growing poker regions and there are thousands upon thousands of players in countries like Brazil and Argentina who will love the chance to take part in events of this kind. In every regard, the LAPT is going to put Latin America on the map as the newest hotspot to play high-stakes international poker," he said.

It is expected that at least 250 players will participate in each event, including greats such as Brazil's Andre Akkari and Costa Rican Humberto Brenes.
