The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) has signed up its millionth member, cementing its status as one of the poker industry's leading voices.

According to PPA chairman and former senator Alfonse D'Amato, the organisation has now launched its own voter registration programme and is forming a political action committee headed by Annie Duke.

"Reaching one million members puts the PPA on par with such political powerhouses as AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) and the National Association of Realtors," he commented.

Mr D'Amato added that the continued expansion of the organisation will allow proponents of online poker "to advocate even more effectively on behalf of our members".

The PPA has been one of the most vocal opponents of America's Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement bill, which outlaws all forms of online gambling including internet-based poker rooms.

It has set a target of signing up a further 100,000 news members at this year's World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
