Neil Channing clinches Irish Poker Open
26th March, 2008
Neil 'Bad Beat' Channing has moved a step closer to becoming a household poker name following his victory at the Irish Poker Open.
Europe's largest and oldest poker tournament kicked off last week at the Eccentric Club in Dublin, boasting a 667-strong player field including the likes of Doyle Brunson and Andy Black.
The Open also had a strong presence among online poker qualifiers this year, with Paddy Power Poker sending some 73 online amateurs and Titan Poker a further 18.
Channing started the final table with a massive chip lead and never relented, cruising through to a comfortable victory that saw him round off proceedings in style with three Aces.
The Sunderland-based poker pro and author earned a healthy 801,400 euro (£632,000) first-place cash prize for his efforts, which marked his first major victory on the circuit.
Channing has previously secured seven money finishes in the World Series of Poker and one in the European Poker Tour.
