New Year sees thousands flock to Vegas

More than 300,000 people crowded on to the Las Vegas strip for the countdown to midnight on New Year's Eve, with 98 per cent of the city's hotel rooms filled.

Partygoers headed to the world-famous casino hub to enjoy a spectacular fireworks display held from the rooftops of seven casinos.

Despite temperatures in the Nevada gambling capital dropping to a chilly 30 degrees, revellers were making the most of the event which also included recordbreaking stunts and celebrity-packed parties.

The Rio All-Suite Casino and Hotel held a New Year, No Limits show which featured motocross star Robbie Maddison breaking the world motorcycle by jumping 322 ft 7.5 ins.

Tourism officials said that the number of people visiting the city for New Year's Eve had risen on last year with guests booking up almost every hotel room in town.

They were expected to splash more than $212 million (106 million) between them in restaurants, casinos, theatres and clubs across the city.
