10th September, 2008

Now living in a post-boom poker era, it seems that the game is just now beginning to reach every corner of the world finally making its way to New Zealand, which is hosting its biggest ever poker tournament next month.

October is the month that the SKYCITY Festival of Poker takes New Zealand by storm, which is expected to have a prize pool of $1 million, with many of the most famous poker professionals making there way over for the big event.

The massive popularity of poker worldwide has taken its time reaching New Zealand, said Ejaaz Dean, executive manager at SKYCITY Auckland. With the likes of international poker stars Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker here to inspire players in a local tournament of this scale the possibilities in New Zealand are endless were just at the very beginning of our own poker craze.

Many are hoping that this tournament will spark a great deal of growth in poker popularity because it hasnt caught on as much in New Zealand as it has in other parts of the world.

We are committed to making SKYCITY the home of New Zealand poker, Dean said. We want the SKYCITY Festival of Poker to become an annual fixture on the world poker circuit and an absolute must for all top poker players.

Many of the local poker professionals are delighted that such a large tournament will be held in New Zealand, instead of having to travel to Las Vegas to play in a big game. Everyone is excited to see what this will do for the game in the future.

I am thrilled to be able to play in a tournament of this quality on home soil, said Lee Nelson, a professional poker player with Team PokerStars. With the numbers expected for the event and the prize pool at stake there is a good chance that new local talent will be discovered and the title be taken by a New Zealander.
