Nottingham to host Norwegian Poker Championships
1st April, 2008
In the latest in a string of bizarre twists and turns to come out of Norway's poker scene, it has been confirmed that the 2008 Norwegian Poker Championships will be held in Nottingham.
A far cry away from the fjords and Arctic isles of the Scandinavian Peninsula, event organisers nonetheless decided that Nottingham would be a more appropriate venue for the seventh edition of the series.
They cited concerns over a number of recent police raids targeting live poker events in Norway, which were apparently authorised after the passing of new legislation that classifies poker as a "lottery".
Poker games have attracted significant media and public attention in the country over recent months - due in large part to the phenomenal success of 19-year-old online poker mogul Annette Obrestad.
Last year the teenager became the youngest person ever to win a World Series of Poker bracelet, but not all Norwegians have welcomed her achievements and many nationals apparently support clamping down on what they see as a negative activity.
Preparations are now underway to ferry some 400 to 500 Norwegian poker players to Nottingham in time for the Championships, which run from April 28th to May 5th.
