Obrestad sweeps poker awards

20th February, 2008

Online poker sensation Annette Obrestad has cleaned up at this year's Norwegian Poker Awards, taking home no fewer than three separate awards.

The 19-year-old prodigy was awarded the Best Performance of the Year, the Best Female Poker Player and the Norwegian Golden Hand accolades for her incredible year on the professional circuit.

She first made a name for herself in late 2006, winning $500,000 (£260,000) on PokerStars, $200,000 on UltimateBet, and $136,000 on Full Tilt Poker - but it was only last year that Obrestad proved she is far from being an online phenomenon.

In just 12 months, the teen cashed an incredible $2.5 million - becoming both the first female and the youngest player ever to win a World Series of Poker main event, as well as coming second at EPT Dublin and performing well on the Party Poker European Open VI.

Obrestad is renowned for her ability to read opponents' playing style, recently confirming internet rumours that she had once played an entire online tournament without looking at her cards.

Other big-name winners at the Norwegian Poker Awards included Gus Hansen, who won Best Live Player; and Thor Hansen, who took home the lifetime achievement award.
