Poker in the Park in Leicester Square
13th August, 2008
Poker in the Park will be back in London for a two-day festival of poker lectures, workshops, autograph signings and the opportunity for poker enthusiasts to get in on the action by taking part in free tournaments held every hour.
The festival, which had its successful inaugural year last year, will be hosted at Leicester Square, a world-famous area of London, the 15-16th of August.
“Over the last three years, poker has become one of the most popular pastimes in Britain, both as viewed on television and in terms people learning and playing with friends,” said Michael Caselli, editor in chief for Bluff Europe. “Poker in the Park is the biggest exhibition in the sport, and it is sure to be entertaining and educational for poker enthusiasts of all levels.”
The two-day event is expected to attract somewhere around 25,000 poker players, and they will be coming to purchase poker books, listen to top players give their advice and tryout the game itself in the free tournaments going on every hour.
“Like chess, to play poker at a competitive level requires practice, education and a high degree of skill, luck plays a very little factor in successful poker; that’s why the poker phenomenon isn’t a flash in the pan, people that start to play find it challenging and they want to improve their game,” Caselli said. “I look at poker as a generational game; the older generation grew up playing bridge, and our generation plays poker. When you start to think of poker in those terms, you realise that poker is here to stay.”
Many feel that this poker festival represents how big and important the game has become worldwide, evidenced by the fact that it draws in such enormous crowds.
