Poker 'most searched term in 2007'

12th December, 2007

Lycos has revealed that 'poker' was the term most commonly entered into its search engine in 2007 for the second year in a row.

The popularity of online casinos has prompted a huge rise in the number of people searching for poker sites, according to the latest research from the media service.

'Poker' beat off the likes of MySpace, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton in the search popularity rankings.

It is believed that the success of the World Poker Tour and an increase in the number of televised celebrity poker tournaments have generated more interest in online poker.

Lycos' 50 Top Search Terms of 2007 was based on the number of people entering the search term on its website from January 1st until December 1st.

A press release from the search provider said that "even the headline-grabbing tabloid antics of Britney Spears were unable to topple poker from the number one spot on this year's list".

Figures from 2005 put the revenues from online poker in the US alone at around $200 million (£98 million) a month – a figure that is likely to have grown considerably in the last two years.
