PokerStars qualifier wins EPT Copenhagen
26th February, 2008
PokerStars qualifier Tim Vance has won the Copenhagen leg of the European Poker Tour, despite getting off to a rocky start that nearly saw him crash out on the first day.
Vance led the final table from the beginning with almost twice as many poker chips (1.4 million) as any of his competitors. At his lowest point he had looked certain to leave with a mere 11,000 chips to his name.
Following an early departure by Swede Patrik Andersson, the final table entered a virtual stalemate with two and a half hours before a further elimination, this time Simon Dorslund of Denmark.
An ill-fated J-5 all-in bluff by France's Nicolas Dervaux left just five people vying for the 6,220,488 DKK (£630,000) cash prize - and it was not long before fellow PokerStars qualifier Daniel Ryan also had to pack his bags after being forced in with A-Q.
Stepping up his poker game, Vance went all-in with pocket eights after a 9-7-J rainbow flush and an increasingly desperate Rasmus Hede Nielsen called with A-Q - ultimately spelling his demise as the turn and the river failed to save him.
Magnus Hansen was the next to leave, setting the stage for a gruelling four-and-a-half hour showdown between Vance and Soren Jensen, with the American finally prevailing with a nut flush in fitting style.
