Professional poker players hit hard by the recession
17th December, 2009
Professional poker players have been envied for years because of their laidback lifestyles and outrageously high incomes for travelling the world and making friends, but it seems that even they are feeling the pinch from the recession!
It was announced back in November that Full Tilt Poker had signed professional super star Tom Dwan to join their Red Pro Team. Tom Dwan is the only member of Full Tilts professional team that begun his career online and has become a fantastic inspiration to others offering his poker knowledge and skills to online players.
In celebration of signing Dwan, Full Tilt gave him his own blog to communicate with players keeping them up to date with his success and helpful hints. However, when he signed with Full Tilt in November, he didn’t think that his run of bad luck would continue and a month later he would be a couple of million dollars down.
This year has been a very difficult time for professional poker players, with the recession playing a big factor in many struggling months. There have been many poker pros that have kept a strong head through the low times and continue to highlight the importance of playing at high levels and that the economic problem will soon pass and they can return to their high stakes and massive prize pool tournaments.
In particular, Tom Dwan has felt the pinch this year having lost $3 million back at the start of 2009 but then won it back midyear. However, he has now slipped again and in the last 2 months has found himself $4 million short, but stresses that although these are big losses he is still not down on the year and hopes to have a good start to January.
Tom Dwan has expressed that he will not let his recent loses get the better of him and is hoping to appear in more live events and tournaments as well as continuing to help online poker players at Full Tilt.
