Selbst bags WPT Ladies bracelet
8th February, 2008
Venessa Selbst has become the second-ever champion of the World Poker Tour Ladies (WPTL) tournament in Los Angeles.
The Brooklyn-based female poker player endured a gruelling 15-hour battle before finally seeing off Las Vegas native Erica Schoenberg.
Among the other 82 contenders were Anna Wroblewski and World Series of Poker bracelet winner Cyndy Violette - but both of them busted out of the $1,000 (£510) buy-in game in the relatively early stages.
The final table also included two seasoned professionals - Katrina Lim and Christina Hung - providing some tough competition for relative newcomer Selbst.
Earlier on in the tournament, proceedings were marred by controversy because of a California ruling that 'women only' events discriminate against males. That led to an intriguing intervention by one male spectator who decided to join the ladies on the felt.
He was eliminated almost immediately.
The current WPTL season comes to a close April with the $1,500 buy-in championship main event at the Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic.
