The Mouth Takes Home Third Bracelet
13th June, 2008
Mike “The Mouth” Matusow won Event 13, $5,000 buy-in No Limit 2-7 Triple Draw w/Rebuys, at the 2008 World Series of Poker.
Outlasting an elite field of poker players including Barry Greenstein, Erick Lindgren, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivy and a list that goes on, Matusow was awarded $537,857 and his third WSOP bracelet.
“To win this, it’s not just about beating the 85 best players in the world, at a game that I don’t have that much experience at – it’s the fact that for six days coming into this tournament, I’ve won 13 pots in six tournaments and I’ve walked out the door with a smile on my face every day laughing because I didn’t give a chip away,” Matusow said.
The tournament was mostly full of seasoned poker professionals because of the game's obscurity, but Matusow says he managed to win because he was focused and kept himself from making mistakes.
“This is one of the sickest things I’ll ever say: I think I’ve made just three mistakes in the last seven tournaments, maybe only two, and most of the time I’m making like five or six mistakes a day, so I’m playing with great patience and great focus at the moment,” Matusow said. “I mean I’m happy I won this, I beat the toughest field in poker history and I know for sure, I played off the f***ing charts; that’s all that matters to me. I think apart from the one hand before the dinner break, I was the best player in the field and that’s why I won.”
