UK pokers first WCOOP winner

12th September, 2008

Taking down a World Championship of Online Poker event is a great feeling, especially after playing for 17 hours straight, but being the first person from the UK to win an event makes it that much sweeter.

Thats what happened for Shane Hellyer who won more than $200,000 in an online poker tournament, which was one of many WCOOP events on the PokerStars online poker site. The tournament began with more than 7,000 and took 17 hours to complete, and the result was big for the UK.

It hasnt really sunk in yet, Hellyer said. At the time I didnt realise I was the first person from the UK to win a WCOOP event. Im very proud to have won it for Britain.

Hellyer said that he got into the game of poker after watching one of his idols Steve Davis, a snooker legend, getting in on the action. Hellyer is a pretty big snooker player himself and decided to follow in the footsteps of someone he respects so much.

The funny thing is, when I first started the tournament I was watching the Big Brother final, and when Rachel won it I thought: wow, well done for winning all that money, and then just 17 hours later, I won more, Hellyer said.

The WCOOP event will also award Hellyer with a gold bracelet, which is worth about 20,000 and will be a great addition to the huge money prize he won.
