WPT Ladies rolls into LA

3rd February, 2008

The World Poker Tour Ladies event resumes today in the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles.

Some 383 female competitors paid a modest $300 (£153) buy-in to earn a seat at the poker table when the Ladies tour kicked off at the Borgata in Atlantic City January 20th.

During this second leg in, however, buy-ins have risen to $1,000 and the competition is expected to be racked up a notch, with last year's LA event attracting more than 100 of the city's top female poker names.

Commenting on the first stage in Borgata, Lyndsay LaGree, senior manager of public relations with the WPT, said that the $33,321 first-place prize had encouraged many amateur players to test their skills in a larger venue for the first time.

"The women involved said they had played home games extensively, but (Borgata) was an opportunity for them to enter into the tournament world," she said. "We're very happy to have provided such an outlet for the ladies."

Ms LaGree conceded that the LA event is expected to be smaller than on the first leg of the tour, but it would nonetheless be a "very challenging event".
