WSOP Announces 'Tournament Of Champions'

26th March, 2010

The world series of poker has announced that it will host a $1million free roll ‘Tournament of Champions’ featuring 27 players with the majority of them being voted in by poker enthusiasts.

The tournament will be the event’s all star game and will take place from June 27th until July 4th.

"There's really never been a way to gauge what poker fans want," World Series of Poker spokesman Seth Palansky said. "We think that this format is going to be a great way to do that."

He continued saying that the voting had received a tremendous response since it was posted on the WSOP website receiving more than 170,000 votes.

Poker fans can vote once for up to 20 participants from the 521 world series of poker bracelet winners. The top twenty from the voting will gain an entry into the tournament.

Joe Cada and Barry Shulman will be given automatic entry into the Tournament of Champions after their wins in 2009.

Annie Duke, Mike Matusow and Mike Sexton are all entered into the Tournament of Champions with the final two slots being awarded to those that qualify online."Assuming it goes the way we expect, it is our intention for it to be an annual event," Palansky said.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard from the Tournament of Chamopions, it was an annual event between 2004 and 2006 however it had a different format to the new and improved tournament.
