Warne swaps the spins for a straight

30th November, 2007

Shane Warne may be better known for his skills on the cricket pitch, but the world-class bowler will next month be trying his hand at poker.

The Australian will be jetting off to the centre of the gambling world, Las Vegas, where he will try his luck at the World Series.

It is reported that the cricketer has been getting some top tips from professional poker player Joe Hachem who has won the world championship in the past.

Fans of the sports star are said to be furious that he could be missing a few months of the cricket season to revel in his other passion, poker.

"I'm in training in my spare time for the world series of poker in Las Vegas next year," Warne said.

"I've got to know Joe Hachem pretty well over the last few years and he's been teaching me, so I'm slowly getting better, but I've still got a lot of work to do."

In 2005, Hachem won $7,500,000 (3,629,685) at the World Series no limit Texas hold 'em championship, managing to beat off 5,618 other players.
